"domestication" of Hyrax (procavia Capensis), in Yemen
نویسنده
چکیده
ABSTRAO'.-A case of attempted small mammal "domestication" is described based on ethnographic data from the Yemen Arab Republic (Fig. 1). Households of low economic status sought to supplement their cash incomes by taming a previously hunted species, the hyrax, Promvm CJlpensis jayakari. The experiments have largely ended in failure due to factors including the animal's biology and a poor management strategy. This episode is placed in the context of animal-impact and human-impact models of domestication.

Synchronous parturition of Procavia capensis and Heterohyrax brucei during drought in Zimbabwe
The demographics of syntopic populations of Procavia capensis (rock hyrax) and Heterohyrax brucei (yellowspotted hyrax) were studied during a drought from October 1991 to May 1992 in the Matobo National Park (MNP), Zimbabwe. Pups comprised >27% of the samples after a synchronous March April 1992 birth event in which about 50% of the adult females participated. The timing and frequency of partur...

Context. Objective assessments of habitat requirements for endangered species are often lacking when planning management strategies, and inappropriate landscape manipulation can sometimes turn an endangered species into a pest. Recent expansive population growth of the rock hyrax Procavia capensis in northern Israel has been attributed largely to the proliferation of man-made boulder piles on t...

Taxonomic notes: While as many as 17 subspecies have been described across its range by Hoeck and Bloomer (2013), only one (P. c. capensis), is recognised from the assessment region (Meester et al. 1986). However, Prinsloo and Robinson (1992) discovered a genetic break between the north-western and south-central populations in South Africa, indicating a possible species complex. Similarly, Viss...
متن کاملSyntactic structure and geographical dialects in the songs of male rock hyraxes.
Few mammalian species produce vocalizations that are as richly structured as bird songs, and this greatly restricts the capacity for information transfer. Syntactically complex mammalian vocalizations have been previously studied only in primates, cetaceans and bats. We provide evidence of complex syntactic vocalizations in a small social mammal: the rock hyrax (Procavia capensis: Hyracoidea). ...
متن کاملElevated testosterone levels and social ranks in female rock hyrax.
In mammals, males maintain significantly higher testosterone (T, 'the male hormone') levels than females throughout the year and are typically dominant over females. Our study of the cooperatively breeding rock hyrax (Procavia capensis) demonstrated a distinct exception. In most hyrax social groups that we studied, adult females were at the highest social rank within the group and showed higher...
